Don’t Doubt Denim
You’ll get a lot of wear out of this shirt.
A dab hand at denim
Chances are you wear a fair amount of denim on your lower half, but don’t sleep on denim as a cracking upper-body fabric. That’s right, we’re talking about denim shirts. You asked us for one, and as ever we’ve obliged. And as you know we’re good listeners. Here are your top denim don’ts:
Ill fitting or poorly cut
Flimsy, low quality denim
Either too thin or too thick (it’s a tightrope)
Buttons that ping off into oblivion
Like jeans for your upper body!
Jeans and Japan go hand-in-hand
Japan is synonymous with top notch denim. We went there to source the denim for our Ultimate Jeans, so of course we returned for the Denim Shirt. It’s from Japan Blue Co. via the Nomura Mill in Okayama. Maybe that’s all Japanese to you, if so, you’ll have to take our word for it that it’s an assurance of quality.
Middleweight champion of the world
Some denims are stiff, coarse and heavy, while others are lightweight and flimsy. Ours is neither. At 240 g/m2, it’s what we think is the perfect weight. Comfortable, durable, and good all year round.
Denim is a matter of personal preference. Some like deep, dark indigo denim, while others like the worn-in-and-washed-out variety. We’re catering for both crowds. Our Rinse version uses a very light wash to preserve the denim’s colour, while the Stone version will look like you’ve owned it for years.
Like a glove
We might sound like a broken record, but fit is everything. We can’t have you going about your business in a badly fitting shirt now, can we? For the Denim Shirt, we’ve used the same fit as our Button-Down Oxford, which we’ve perfected over time based on your feedback.
In? Out? Shake it all about?
Just like the wash of your denim, whether or not you tuck in your shirt is a highly contentious issue. And once again we’re playing the peacemakers by making our shirt long enough to tuck in, but not so long that it looks like a kaftan if you’re more of an untucked kind of guy.
The Days of Pearly Spencer
You might not give much thought to the buttons on your shirt, but you certainly notice if they’re cheap plastic that breaks after a few spins in the machine. For the Denim Shirt we’ve selected some rather nice mother of pearl buttons, made by Italian manufacturer Uniesse.
Button down the hatches
Collars on denim shirts can quite quickly lose their shape and look a bit scruffy. But not so with ours. We’ve used the same neat 7cm point, fused button-down collar you’ll find on our Oxfords, which is always where you want it to be.
Some denim shirts have two chest pockets, but to create a modern, minimal effect we’ve gone with just the one. A classic pointed patch pocket, right where you need it to be.
Regulars will know that a lot of the world’s shirt shamans live in Portugal, and we’ve got a direct line to them. For this one we enlisted the help of our friends over Caetano. Safe pair of hands.
Rinse and repeat

Four of us started Asphalte back in 2016. With a few years of experience in fashion under our belts, we wanted to make clothes, but not just any old clothes. Well-made clothes, designed to last, using great materials and made in good conditions. The guys we wanted to kit were our mates, who liked clothes but who weren't willing to go all out on a pair of jeans. We send them a survey to find out what they expected from a brand. Their answers were so enlightening that we opened the questionnaires up to everyone. Best decision we ever made.
Since then, you've been at the start of every clothes we make. We ask for your opinion on a product before we get busy with the design process, and that's the way forward for us.
We're not here to reinvent the wheel. We're here to make your wardrobe classics with the best materials and the best manufacturers. Above all, we're here to make things simple, stuff that you'll still be able to wear in ten years' time.
Over the last 4 years, we've gradually put together the dream team to make it happen on a larger scale. Today, there are 45 of us working to make your favourite clothes, in a quality that was once reserved for a handful of men.
