Fully functional, our Cargo Shorts are reporting for duty

What you wanted in a pair of Cargo Shorts

There’s more to making cargo shorts than just plonking a few big pockets on a pair of shorts. We wanted to carefully consider everything from the fabric to the seams to make sure every detail was fit for modern life. When we asked what you wanted, it seems you were on the same page—here’s what you were hankering for...

The Roll Call

Tough stuff

It goes without saying that cargo shorts need to be built to last, so we spent a good while searching for the right fabric for the job. Our hunt led us to cotton sateen. This is a tried and tested military fabric that’s tough, with a smooth, crisp finish—ideal for our Cargo Shorts then. We opted for 275 gram per square metre organic sateen from Italy. Perfect.

Handy haulage

Want pockets? You’re in the right place. Our Cargo Shorts have not one, not two, but six ultra-functional pockets, ready to be stuffed with whatever you see fit. You have the two flap pockets on the back and the two pleated pockets on the thighs which each double up. Leave the jacket at home—these will easily do the job.

A sharper shape

Old army surplus gear is great for inspiration, but it often needs to be neatened up a bit for civilian use. We trimmed our shorts down a touch to make them a bit smarter for everyday special ops. There’s still plenty of room to move, but they’re a bit more grown up.

A world of comfort

Hardy fabrics don’t always make for the most comfortable of clothes, so we laundered our shorts to up the comfort stakes. This basically means they feel really nice and soft—good news for your legs.

The heavy artillery

As if that military-approved cotton wasn’t enough, we called in reinforcements in all the key zones. That means a chunky YKK zip on the fly, bar-tacks around the pocket-entries and some sturdy stitching on the waist. Our shorts aren’t going AWOL after one summer, they’re made for years of service.

Make it snappy

All those pockets aren’t much use if you can’t get into them. Any hardened veterans of the cargo short scene will know that the big buttons on the thigh pockets can often be pretty fiddly, so we replaced them with some snappy press-studs instead. Not only are these a breeze to use, but they’ve got a cleaner, sharper look too.

Bags of flavour

Tired of your pocket bags flapping about every time you reach for your keys? Well, you’re in luck. We’ve secured ours firmly in place, meaning they’re going nowhere. It’s a small detail, but one that makes a big difference.

Sharp and subtle

We wanted these to be functional, yet wearable, so we stripped-back a few details for a slightly more subtle look. That meant no cinch-adjusters on the waist, fewer buttons and some particularly tasteful tonal stitching. Sophisticated isn’t usually a word associated with military shorts, but we reckon that’s exactly what these are. Ambassador, you’re spoiling us.

Highly versatile

Thanks to their slightly slicker shape, these aren’t just for long hikes and bike rides, and they work just as well with a hoodie in the park as they do with a Button-Down on a city break.

Short Cargos, long adventures.

The team

Asphalte - Le Short Cargo - l'équipe

Four of us started Asphalte back in 2016. With a few years of experience in fashion under our belts, we wanted to make clothes, but not just any old clothes. Well-made clothes, designed to last, using great materials and made in good conditions. The guys we wanted to kit were our mates, who liked clothes but who weren't willing to go all out on a pair of jeans. We send them a survey to find out what they expected from a brand. Their answers were so enlightening that we opened the questionnaires up to everyone. Best decision we ever made.

Since then, you've been at the start of every clothes we make. We ask for your opinion on a product before we get busy with the design process, and that's the way forward for us.

We're not here to reinvent the wheel. We're here to make your wardrobe classics with the best materials and the best manufacturers. Above all, we're here to make things simple, stuff that you'll still be able to wear in ten years' time.

Over the last 4 years, we've gradually put together the dream team to make it happen on a larger scale. Today, there are 40 of us working to make your favourite clothes, in a quality that was once reserved for a handful of men.
