Hold that thought
A wallet’s not your only option, you know. If you’re the sort of person that likes to travel light, there’s the card holder, too.
Time to downsize big time
Let’s face it, we’re well on our way to a cashless society, and you’re fed up of carrying that Nectar card around just in case someone asks you if you’ve got one. The card holder represents freedom. That is, if it doesn’t have any of these glaring issues:
Barely holds anything
Paper or plastic?
All aboard the grain train
You might be thinking, ‘Here we go, they’re gonna start talking about full-grain leather again.’ You know us well. High quality full-grain leather is the only way to go for an item like this. It’s like we always say, you can’t have leather goods without good leather.
Like a certificate from the Sorbonne
The leather is a French calfskin, which is LWG-certified. That basically means that it’s passed rigorous environmental standards, but we prefer to imagine it’s a bit like a certificate from the Sorbonne.
Working on our tan
Tanning leather is a complicated business. You don’t just chuck everything in a vat and hope for the best. That’s why we trust the tanning titans of Lo Stivale in Italy. They’re experts in the vegetable-tanning process that produces this rich colour.
Rinse and repeat
Not only is the colour nice and deep, it’s hardwearing, too. The leather is soaked in a dye bath before being rinsed to remove excess pigment. This is a lot more effective than just dyeing the surface of the leather, which can easily mark or rub off.
The added benefit of vegetable-tanned leather is that it ages a lot better than its chemically-coloured counterparts. Essentially, the more you use it, the better it gets, as it takes on a personality all of its own. Careful, your pals might end up preferring your card holder to you.
Follow the thread
There are really only a couple of ingredients that go into a card holder – leather and thread. We’ve established the leather is good, so it’s time to think about the thread. We’ve used a heavy duty waxed thread with reinforced stops so it won’t give up the ghost (even if your bank balance does).
A hair’s breadth
The real advantage a card holder has over a wallet is how streamlined it is. A bulky card holder would be a pretty useless invention. Good thing, then, that ours is just 4mm thick when it’s empty. Say goodbye to the dreaded pocket bulge.
Leave the library card at home
Our Card Holder has three slots and a top slit pocket, meaning you only carry the essentials with you. That’s good, you could do with a bit of self-discipline.
Portuguese, if you please
Portugal, home of the pastel de nata, fortified wine, and tip top leather goods. To be precise, we enlisted the help of the fine folk at Belcinto for this one, and as you can probably tell from the pictures alone, they’re no slouches.

Four of us started Asphalte back in 2016. With a few years of experience in fashion under our belts, we wanted to make clothes, but not just any old clothes. Well-made clothes, designed to last, using great materials and made in good conditions. The guys we wanted to kit were our mates, who liked clothes but who weren't willing to go all out on a pair of jeans. We send them a survey to find out what they expected from a brand. Their answers were so enlightening that we opened the questionnaires up to everyone. Best decision we ever made.
Since then, you've been at the start of every clothes we make. We ask for your opinion on a product before we get busy with the design process, and that's the way forward for us.
We're not here to reinvent the wheel. We're here to make your wardrobe classics with the best materials and the best manufacturers. Above all, we're here to make things simple, stuff that you'll still be able to wear in ten years' time.
Over the last 4 years, we've gradually put together the dream team to make it happen on a larger scale. Today, there are 45 of us working to make your favourite clothes, in a quality that was once reserved for a handful of men.
